Barnard Castle Steam Fair May 2005
The Barnard Castle Steam Fair
was held over the Bank Holiday weekend
and attracted a large number of
exhibitors from near and far. Organised
by John Toulson, a well known haulage
contractor and steam enthusiast,
the fair is always a great event
to attend and this year was no exception.
John's own engines were on show
alongside showmen's engines and
traction engines from as far as
Montrose in Scotland with Sandy
Mair bringing down his Fowler Traction
Engine 'Fraoch'. Also in the steam
line up were the Turner Brothers
of Thormanby's 1931 Fowler Showmen's
Engine and 'Laddie', a 10 ton Clayton
& Shuttleworh road roller. A
number of Scammel trucks attended
along with an array of vintage commercial
vehicles.
The
tractor section included many of
John's tractors including one of
my former tractors, a Chamberlain
Super 90 manufactured in Australia.
Also in the tractor area was a Doe
Triple D, a Roadless 115 and several
Muir-Hill tractors including a MH-171
and a MH101 with cherry picker.
Tractor
pulling is always a popular event
at Barnard Castle and there was
plenty of black smoke as tractors
from afar afield as Gloucestershire
tested their pulling power against
John's sledge. Ian Tanner brought
up his modified Ford 5000 seen in
the pictures below, while Chris
Morrison brought his International
634, with a V8 Perkins engine. Also
at the tractor pulling was Ken Neson
from Yorkshire with his Leyland
285 alongside the Barnard Castle
Tractor pullers.
